British Values and SMSC

Promoting Fundamental British Values

In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The Key Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

SMSC at Thomas Barnes Primary School

(Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural understanding)

At Thomas Barnes we believe in building a community of confident, responsible, compassionate and respectful children who will grow up into strong and active members of society who are able to take their place in the world and go on to achieve great and exciting things.

Our school curriculum is planned to support this, and enriched with a wealth of opportunities for pupils to learn and play together, to take part in a wide variety of cultural activities, and to mix with people of other ages, cultures and faiths in order to develop understanding and interest in the world.

Each year we designated SMSC days where children are immersed in different religions and cultural celebrations.
