Behaviour
At Thomas Barnes Primary School, we place a strong emphasis on high expectations for behaviour, respect and personal development.
Our approach is built around 'Marvellous Manners', 'Respectful Routines', clear classroom rules and our school values – the '5Cs'. Together, these ensure that pupils understand how to behave well, show respect to others and take pride in their school.
Pupils are taught Marvellous Manners so that politeness and kindness become part of everyday school life. Children are encouraged to use respectful language such as please, thank you, excuse me and good morning/afternoon. This helps to create a warm, welcoming and respectful culture across the school.
Our Respectful Routines establish clear expectations for how pupils move around the school, listen, take turns and care for their learning environment. Consistent routines help classrooms remain calm, purposeful and focused on learning.
Each class follows clear Classroom Rules which support pupils in understanding the behaviours that help everyone learn successfully. These rules promote listening, effort, respect and responsibility.
Central to our ethos are our 5Cs:
Calm – pupils manage their behaviour and make sensible choices.
Caring – pupils show kindness and consideration for others.
Co-operative – pupils work well together and support their peers.
Confident – pupils develop self-belief and are willing to try new challenges.
Committed – pupils show determination and pride in their work.
Our school mascot, Tommy the Dog, plays an important role in promoting these values. Tommy regularly reminds pupils that good behaviour and positive attitudes help everyone to learn and feel happy at school!
Through this shared approach, pupils develop strong character, positive relationships and excellent attitudes to learning, helping them to succeed both in school and in the wider community.
